Somatic therapy

The body often remembers what the mind has tried to set aside.

What it is

Somatic therapy brings attention to sensations, breath, and movement. Noticing what happens in the body helps your nervous system settle and process stress.

It is based on the understanding that stress and trauma live in the body, not only in thoughts and memories.

What it can help with

  • Chronic tension or feeling on edge.
  • Trauma responses.
  • Feeling disconnected from your body or emotions.
  • Anxiety and panic.
  • Trouble relaxing or resting.

What a session is like

Alongside talking, we pause to notice what is happening in your body, such as tightness, warmth, or the urge to move, and stay with it gently.

There is no touch. Somatic work is fully suited to teletherapy.

Common questions

  • Do I need to be comfortable with my body? No. We start wherever you are and go slowly.
  • Is it the same as mindfulness? Related, but focused on working with your nervous system in a therapeutic relationship.
